It seems I come up against this alot in what I do and thats a certain stigma that sunless tanning has associated with it. Alot of people who have tried some form of sunless...a booth, hand applied or sprayed on by a tech.
The problem is people think... well I won't do that again it didn't work or looked horrible because it was spotty or way to dark for your skin tone. Most consumers don't know that the sunless industry is not regulated, so ANYONE can go pick up a machine and solutions and just start spraying people. All they need is a business license with the state and county they are operating a business in...thats all. Some sunless companies offer training when you buy a package with them but always an additional cost, most think.. "oh this is easy I don't need to spend money on training" IF it was sooooo easy how come there are so many bad spray tans out there? Alot of bad tans come from unprepared clients and technicians who have no idea about skin, skin tones or know even how to do a consultation. When looking for a professional check out their reviews, ask about training and ask questions about them and their reason for offering this service. You as a client have a right to know that who will be spraying you knows what they are doing before you even make an appointment. Be proactive in your own glow! Cheers Lovelies!

When you have a session with me I always give you tips on how to make your glow last and fade just like a real tan. I decided to give a little low down here on my blog for those of you who may not be able to have a session with me.
~First I always tell my clients to use high quality products to exfoliate and hydrate their skin. Cheap products have junk them; yes I'm a product snob! (wink) ~Exfoliate on a regular basis, not just once right before your tan. ~You can make your own simple scrub; granulated sugar and a Rami mitt or washcloth. ~Hydrate your skin from the inside out; Drink lots of water and use a great lotion. ~Do not spray perfume on your chest, spray it on your clothes. Your tan can get splotchy here due to the build up of perfume it permeates the skin w/repeated use. ~Stay away from really hot showers and NO baths till you want to remove the tan. When your ready to do that take a HOT batch with some baby oil and baking soda and soak for 10min then stand up and scrub. ~If you skip days of putting lotion on your skin then it will fade quicker and can get splotchy...A real tan does the same thing. Its your natural cells shedding, they don't shed evenly. ~The more you do sunless the better it keeps taking, Even my clients who do it only once a month find that it looks so natural. ~Before working out put a little cornstarch based powder on the shoulders, between breasts, under underarms. Then when done make sure to rinse off the sweat don't let it sit on your skin to dry, sweat has all those toxins that you just got out of your body...so rinse! Hope this helps you get good sunless even if I can't be the one giving it to you! Cheers! When most think of a sunless tan the image of a really tan look is about the only option when in reality sunless can be many different colors.
Many first time clients especially ones that are fair don't realize that when getting a sunless tan that they can actually have something that is soft and pretty. My favorite is actually to keep it on the medium to light side as this is most natural looking for our area here in Seattle. When proper care is given it will look just like a real tan and gradually fade away. If your going on Vacation to someplace warm or tropical you can have a little more fun and I recommend a tan extender to take with you to keep a safe glow going. But in Seattle this time of year now thru New Years soft and glowing is just the ticket! So remember to do good prep and it will keep people guessing because it will look so natural and pretty they won't guess its Faux Tan! Being a Mom myself its defiantly been an adventure to say the least! Being in the sunless industry for as long as I have has also let me help alot of Mom's feel just a little sexier, more self confident and just pretty about themselves.
Whether its going on vacation to Hawaii or putting on a cocktail dress after losing the baby weight...which is a celebration in itself!! As the seasons change I personally start to feel a little pasty and kind of blah at the thought of a NW winter on the horizon. Its actually my favorite time of year to have a sunless tan, picks me up and puts a smile on my face. The biggest change that you need to remember is to go lighter than in the summer months so thats its not obvious that you just got a spray tan. As a Mom any thing that makes you feel better, sexier, prettier or makes you smile is all good!! I think the men in your life would agree as well. ;) Mom's you want to make sure that if your nursing that when you get one that you cover up your nipples as its a membrane directly into your bloodstream. NOT something you need in your body while breastfeeding or pumping! I always have my pregnant Mom's to be wear a mask during their session and I also have protective eye glasses if needed as well. One note is to stay OUT of the spray booths while you are pregnant, inhaling that thick mist is not good for you or little on on board!! Ask your doc he will agree, get a professionally applied sunless tan. This is not the time to go the inexpensive route. So for all the Mom's when you need a little pick-me-up try some sunless for some sexy glow just for you and the other benefits (boyfriend, husband or partner thinking you look smokin hot!!) are not bad either... Cheers Moms! What most of us forget is that the skin has a mind of its own due to your fluctuating hormones. You can get a spray tan one time, go back get the exact same color and it may be a little lighter or darker than last time...WHY you ask?
Several things can contribute to this, like I said hormones play a big role. But other things like medications can really mess with your skin as everything we put into our bodies come out thru our skin and hair. Why do you think they can find out if you have been using drugs thru a hair sample?? So if you have had a recent surgery that as well can mess with your skin. The medications and the anesthesia can play havoc too. Other things like pregnancy and menopause which can cause some extreme fluctuations in your skin can cause your tan to come out lighter, darker or patchy sometimes. I know this all sounds bad, but I always want my clients to be in the know, if you just had a surgery or are in your first trimester then wait a week or two then make you appointment. Simple fix and a wonderful tan will ensue! Cheers Lovelies! While your pregnant you may think that tanning of any kind is not safe anymore. Well you are partly right, during this most amazing time your body undergoes soooo many transformations.
Laying in the sun for obvious reasons is not the best idea, but the worst is going into the spray booths. The air is full of tanning solution in a thick mist and your breathing that in?! Please stay out of them at least while your pregnant, if you choose to go back to them after up to you. You also may want to wait till your second trimester as your skin and hormones are in overdrive your tans may turn out a little funky. You can get a gorgeous tan though thru sunless and thats when you have a technician spray you. I have my clients wear a disposable mask till the end, I also use my Eco-cert. Organic DHA express glow. You have less time on the skin and lots of organic ingredients to replenish your skin. So if your doing those beautiful pregnancy pictures keep that in mind, I did quite a few this summer and was soooo fun for me. Now if I could just get the pictures from the now new busy Mama's ;) Cheers Mommies to be! I have had a wide range of clients over the years from those who have had skin cancer to those who are heading out for a Caribbean vacation to Vegas for a girls weekend.
I think the reasons are many here in Seattle but to me I love it when its just for you and a lifestyle you choose over going to tanning beds. Lately the biggest thing I hear from new clients of mine is " I didn't realize you could get such a natural looking spray tan" people if you have not had an airbrush or spray tan in at least a year or more...its time to give it a try again. My personal fave is when others can't figure out what you did because its so pretty and compliments you and your skin...Makes your smile brighter and eyes just sparkle. Now thats a good spray tan...sorry Snooki! Your tan at the VMA's tonight made me cringe...Yikes. On the other hand Katie Perry and Lady GaGa looked sooo pretty in exchange for their normally fair complexion. So next time you look in the mirror and want a little pick me up or if your heading to Hawaii, Cabo or maybe a family reunion...try a little sunless for your occasion! Happy Sunless! I have put together alot of info on my prep page but wanted to go over a few things that will help pro-long your tan for you that you may not know about.
1. Exfoliate yes but stay away from oil based salt or sugar scrubs 24hrs before your tan, they leave a heavy residue on the skin that can interfere with the sunless solution. 2. Shave with a new blade either the night before if you have an AM session or the morning of if you have an afternoon or evening session. That way it shaves close and you will not have to shave as soon, also stay away from those womens shave creams...caustic to a sunless tan while you have it on your skin! 3. If your pregnant and in your first trimester either forgo the tan till your 2nd trimester or at least talk to your tech or let the salon know when booking the appt. Your hormones are all over the place and your tan may not come out the best. But please stay OUT of the booths while your pregnant, you do NOT need to inhale that while with baby! I offer my most natural solution and a mask to wear as well while I tan you. 4. Cool it down, meaning your shower temperatures hot water is drying to the skin and your sunless tan. Stay away from baths while you have your tan as well until you want to remove it then soak away! If you take frequent showers 2 or more a day then your tan will not last for the normal amount of time just to let you know. 5. If your a soap user then use an olive oil based soap not cheap commercialized soaps; Dove, Oil of Olay, tone, ivory you get the idea and please stay away from deodorant soaps! With bodywash's use an SLS free one all of the Sodium Lauryl sulfates are drying and can cause your tan to streak. 6. Use lotions that are petrochemical free; petroleum and mineral oil free and nothing anti-aging they are designed to take away dead skin. The more natural the better and moisture is key; nut oils, shea butter, olive oil things that are good for your skin! Final note~ don't be afraid to ask questions and let your technician know any concerns or problems you may have had with a past experience. Cheers lovelies! Sunless Tanning is a pretty review based industry as many clients I have if they are not referred they found me thru one of my reviews on the Web.
I'm very proud of my reviews and am grateful for each of them!! But I'm mostly just so happy that those women felt so good after one of my tans that they let me know in a sincere compliment thats what I consider a review...a compliment of my work. You can check out a the ones on my site of course and also on Yelp.com and facebook.com/divinesunlesstanning they are under the tab "review" at the top of the page. I hope you all had a safe and very fun Holiday weekend! Cheers to you! Some interesting key words lately I have been noticing in my web stats..."spray tanning between breasts and under" I think people are having some issues with this area and I would love to address it.
In my experience thru the years of doing airbrush tanning and now HVLP as well the area of the breast's is a delicate situation. The pores here can actually be on the larger side on some women, and if this area gets sprayed to heavily with solution can leave the skin looking like it has blackheads the next day. NOT quite what you had in mind I'm sure is it?? Your part: scrub this area very well several times before your session, you can also treat this area with some witch hazel or a gentle toner too, to help with pores an hour or so before your spray tan. This will help tighten them some and you can also use a cold washcloth then follow up with the toner to help close the pores. One other thing that can lead to splotchyness here is women who directly apply perfume to the area right above breasts and between. Spray your clothes NOT your skin and that should help. Technician: The person spraying you should take into consideration your pore size on your chest and face area and not spray to much or spray a little father away. If pore size on the face is larger you can bet the skin between the breasts is similar and adjust accordingly. Peeling spray tan: This can be a combination of things, not exfoliating well and on a regular basis and possibly product or oils on the chest prior to spraying. If you don't keep up with lotion as well it can make matters even worse. I know great right?! Doing a prep right before your session will help remove any product residue and natural oil accumulation from the skin as well. Ask beforehand if the place your going to offers a skin prep like I do before they spray you. Especially if you have had this problem in the past. Communicate that with the tech spraying you so that she knows and can adjust her technique. Down Under...Last but not least is spraying under the girls, this is also a tricky area as the skin on skin contact will leave the solution in a moist place where it can't properly dry like the rest of your body. I usually spray just once underneath as I would rather it be slightly lighter than "orange" or have streaks if you spray to much. If you are large breasted I suggest wearing a strapless old bra to cut down on any issues. Hope this help you! Cheers! |
